Rug Care Guide
A well-made hand-knotted rug can last for generations. A little regular care keeps it looking its best.
Everyday care
- Vacuum regularly with suction only, or with the beater bar turned off. Vacuum in the direction of the pile.
- Never vacuum the fringe. Gently comb it straight instead.
- Rotate the rug every 6 to 12 months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Shake out small rugs outdoors now and then.
Spills and stains
- Act quickly. Lift solids with a spoon.
- Blot, don’t rub, with a clean white cloth.
- Dab with cool water, then blot dry. Work from the outside of the spot toward the center.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach and household carpet cleaners.
- Dry the area fully. Prop it up and use a fan if needed.
- For pet accidents, red wine or anything that won’t come out, call a professional rug cleaner soon.
Use a rug pad
A quality rug pad stops slipping, adds cushion, protects your floor and helps your rug last longer by reducing wear.
Professional cleaning
Have hand-made rugs professionally washed every 2 to 5 years, depending on foot traffic, pets and children. Choose a cleaner who specializes in hand-made rugs; wall-to-wall carpet methods can damage wool and natural dyes.
Sunlight, moths and storage
- Strong direct sun fades any rug over time. Use curtains or UV-filtering glass where you can, and rotate the rug.
- Moths love dark, undisturbed wool. Vacuum under furniture and check the back of the rug once in a while.
- To store a rug, clean it first, roll it (never fold it for long periods) pile-side in, and wrap it in breathable cotton, not plastic.
